Emblematic face and hand gestures are important nonverbal communication techniques that are used in all human languages to express feelings and emotions that words may fail to deliver. Such gestures differ from one culture to another and may cause misunderstanding if people involved are not aware of the semiotic systems each of them employ.
That’s why non-verbal communication is as important as the verbal one and that’s why it should be studied carefully especially for those who frequently deals with foreigners. Turks and Arabs seem to have a somehow different system of non- verbal communication. The non-verbal strategies both of them use in; refusing, accepting, greeting and others are not the same in the two cultures under investigation. Being unaware of such differences may cause great misunderstanding between speakers of such different languages and cultures.
The present study focuses on the way Turks and Arabs use emblematic gestures along with their normal verbal communication and even instead of actual words occasionally.
Firstly, the researcher provides a list of the movements and gestures that coincide in the two cultures under investigation. Secondly, another list of Gestures and Facial expressions that do not coincide are provided.
The study also highlights the fact that in the two cultures there are some gestures which are used a like but with different meanings and indications.
