This study examines the flooded areas according to the extreme flooded years (1988- 1994- 1998- 1999- 2013- 2020) which occurred in Sudan, flash flood causes a lot of damages, loss of life and other disaster. Surface water distribution extraction using satellite images has been a hot topic in the remote sensing. In the last decade, there has been a lot of research towards extracting water bodies from satellite images using different methods. The Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) are the most used to detect surface water bodies using satellite data .Sudan suffered from flash flood in 1988, 1994, 1998, 1999, 2006, 2013 and last in 2020, the determination of the flooded areas in Khartoum where detected by using Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI) and Modified Normalized Difference Water Index (MNDWI) from Landsat 8-5 and 4 images. The flooded areas were calculated and compared with the other flooded years, it’s shown that the massive flood area in 2020, both (NDWI) and (MNDWI) can be good methods for water body identification.
