A Pragmatic Study of Humor in Satirical Comic TV Show: Saturday Night Live Contrastive Approach

This paper focuses on the analysis of humor in specific programs; satirical comic Tv. Shows. This paper represents a linguistic analysis of an Egyptian T.V show and contrasts it with its American T.V show version in order to determine the linguistic nature of understanding in both kinds of programs for native or non-native viewers. It additionally investigates the differences and similarities between both shows, with emphasis on the pragmatic devices such as deixis, implicature, presupposition, speech acts and politeness that are utilized to convey the intended meaning. It analyzes the verbal humor of incongruity theory from pragmatic perspective so as to appreciate the language style of this kind of T.V show better. Satirical comic programs play significant role as effective way of persuading. Such satirical comic programs have the ability to influence the public opinions through their use of different aspects of life. They succeed in simplifying and crystallizing the complex events in the community.
