المستخلص

This paper explores the theme of migration in children’s picture books, focusing on the interaction between text and image in “Zugvögel” (Migratory Birds). The book tells the story of migratory birds who must leave at the end of the season, symbolizing themes of displacement, belonging, and community. By examining the visual and linguistic elements, the study analyzes how the book portrays migration and the challenges faced by those who leave or stay. Special attention is given to how the images complement or expand upon the text, using parallelism to deepen the emotional and narrative layers. Furthermore, the role of visual rhetoric in illustrating complex emotions, such as fear and hope, is discussed. The analysis draws upon theories of picture-text relations and illocutionary acts to demonstrate how images function as assertive, emotive, and directive communicative tools. Ultimately, the study reveals how “Zugvögel” (Migratory Birds) offers young readers a nuanced portrayal of migration, encouraging empathy and tolerance through its multimodal storytelling.
