“Words Gone with the Sea”, Exploring Lehmann’s Post-Dramatic Theatre in Jon Fosse’s I Am the Wind (2011)

The paper sheds light on the post-dramatic features in Jon Fosse’s play I Am the wind. Fosse is the 2023 Nobel Prize Winner for Literature. Using Hans-Thies Lehmann’s framework of such theatre, the paper proves that many post-dramatic features are present in the play. Such elements include: the visual, the dual structure, the fragments, the spaces between words, the ambiguity, the gestures, the poetic presentation of the play as well as the distinctive mise-en-scene and the design. Fosse deserts the classical rules of drama. Consequently, the play is open to several interpretations depending on the audience’s flair and tendency. Topics of death, identity and lack of communication are interwoven in the poetic dialogues between the two and the sole characters in the play within a minimalistic style. Collage and montage play a major role in the play which depends on collaborative interaction between the actors as well as the director. Herein, the actors are not for mere representation of the text, rather they are at the centre of choral arrangement for the sake of collective expression. The audience on the other hand, sympathizes and empathizes with the attempts of the characters to adapt with hard nature symbolized by the sea in the play. Time sways between past and present in the poetic dialogue and pauses of the characters. Using the analytic approach, the paper ends ultimately, with questions regarding the further developments of such theatre pattern in the future.
